A Meditation Curriculum for Recovery
By Sue Greenwood MS, RYT-500

*A rotating class curriculum for recovery clients to discover meditation as a useful tool in
long-term health.

*Exposes clients to many different types of meditation allowing them to continue with methods that suit their individual needs.

*Material designed to be taught by current counselors and group leaders, no “special” training or teacher required. Training information included. Just be interested in meditation!

*A cost-effective way to promote a variety of resources to clients. Will tie in with current wellness (yoga, tai chi, exercise classes, etc.) programs.

GOALS of this Curriculum

The goal of this curriculum is to give students several tools for meditation so they may choose those that work best for them for long term daily practice incorporated into their recovery plan. Acknowledging that all students are not the same, this work allows each individual to explore or re-connect with mediation on their level, working up the channel of awareness. Moving from the “monkey mind” to clarity, serenity, and peace.

Students will learn:

Concentration meditation

Guided meditation

Moving meditation

Contemplative meditation

Silence and it's importance in reflection and clarity

Mindfulness meditation

Simple definitions of each

Resources for continued practice

Sample Meditation:

We are creation. Every other creature on this earth is creation. As people, we are spiritual beings having a human experience. None higher than the other. None more important. We are all created from, and as, pure essence of love. Let us now ground into the foundation of that experience and learn that through stability, there is freedom.

As we are seated, imagine real and physical roots, coming out of your body, connecting you down to the earth. Connecting the physical self to this reality, it's beauty, it's opportunities for growth. These roots are healthy, deep, and create the feelings of purpose, nourishment, and tranquility. These roots hold the physical self...stabilizing the body, giving the ability to grow up, and toward the sun...as our goals and aspirations in life. With this healthy foundation, we experience this freedom to expand and grow our spiritual and mental selves now...through our own motivation, keeping in mind that we area all one, connected, and in relationship. Earth, sky, beings...working together to create purposeful life, thriving in seasons, ebbing and flowing naturally....
2-3 minute silence

Now the upper body begins to noticeably expand. The arms lengthen, the spine lengthens...the crown of the head reaches toward sky. The heart space naturally expands as the chin lifts. Feel the growth in this loving, nurturing and safe place.

This growth is possible both down to the roots and up toward the sun of our aspirations because of the seed of intention. This seed intends on wellness, wholeness, growth, nurturing, acceptance, and tranquility therein. As we sit in this expanded posture, we focus on growing these feelings and intentions daily.

Together we grow:

purpose

nurturing of both self and others

tranquility

beauty

acceptance

5-10 minutes of silence.
